Students from ScoilMhuire visited BHC for the second of their two Robotics Workshops on Tuesday 12th of February. During the two workshops students have learned about Robotics and its wide use in our everyday lives.
Each student built their own robot using the latest LEGOMindstorm LEGO. LEGO MINDSTORM gives students the power to design, create and build their own robotic LEGO creatures, vehicles, machines and inventions! By combining LEGO elements with a programmable brick, motors and sensors, students are able to make their creations walk, talk, grab, think, shoot and do almost anything you can imagine.
Each day the studentswere set with a number of challenges they had to complete. These challenges encouraged students to think critically, problem solve, and work as a team in order to solve these problems! Over the two sessions they worked in pairs to build a robot, write code and programme it to successfully complete various tasks. They were ably assisted by a number of Beech Hill College TY students. These Transition year students who are currently engaged in A LEGO mindstorms robotics course in BHC used their expertise to assist the 6th class students as they worked through their programmes.
All the students were eager to get stuck in and seemed to relish the challenges. The room was a full of excitement as they trailed and tweaked their code. The culmination of the two workshops was the completion of an assault course. In undertaking this taskstudents had to use all the skills and knowledge they had accumulated over the 2 days. Needless to say all rose to the occasion and had great fun completing the course. All involved have really enjoyed the workshops so far!
